The first corner drugstore (1901)
Charles R. Walgreen Sr. purchased the drugstore where he worked as a pharmacist on Chicago’s South Side, establishing the foundation for what would become America’s most trusted pharmacy brand. His commitment to personal service and fair prices set the standard for generations to come.
Inventing the pharmacy experience (1920s-1940s)
Walgreens revolutionized the American drugstore by introducing the malted milkshake in 1922 and pioneering the self-service pharmacy model. By 1929, we had grown to 525 stores across the nation, proving that accessible, convenient pharmacy care was essential to American communities.
Leading in safety and technology (1968-1984)
We were the first major drugstore chain to put prescriptions in child-resistant containers in 1968, years before it was required by law. In 1984, Walgreens connected all pharmacy departments via satellite—the first chain to do so—ensuring patients could access their prescriptions anywhere in our network.
Digital innovation and access (1999-2009)
Pharmacy went digital with the launch of Walgreens.com in 1999. In 2002, we became the first drugstore to offer prescription labels in multiple languages chainwide. During the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, we helped put community pharmacy on the map for immunizations, paving the way for expanded vaccine services.
